The District Education Officer for Oyam, David Adea, has called on schools across the district to take urgent safety precautions following a tragic lightning strike that claimed a senior six student.
Adea urged School Management Committees and Boards of Governors to immediately inspect and ensure the proper installation and functionality of lightning arrestors in their institutions, especially during this rainy season.
He emphasised that school authorities must act deliberately to safeguard both learners and staff, noting that increased rainfall heightens the risk of lightning-related incidents.
Adea also reiterated the government policy requiring the compulsory installation of lightning arrestors in school classroom blocks.
Meanwhile, Kamdini sub-county chairman Terence Omonya revealed that the fatal incident at Atapara Secondary School marks the second lightning-related tragedy in Oyam District within three weeks.
He referenced an earlier incident at Global View Nursery and Primary School in Juma Parish, Kamdini sub-county, on February 17, 2026, where one person died and 18 pupils, mostly from Primary Four and Five, were injured.
