Over 200 learners stranded after storm destroys classrooms in Kalaki

A total of 235 learners at Okongol Primary School in Lwala parish, Otuboi subcounty, Kalaki district, have been left without classrooms after a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds destroyed the temporary structures where they had been studying.
The storm, which struck on July 31, 2026, ripped off roofs and damaged classroom structures, disrupting learning at the community-based primary school. The destruction has left school authorities concerned about the resumption of lessons, as the institution has no adequate classrooms to accommodate the affected learners.
Okongol Primary School largely depends on temporary classroom structures, with only one semi-permanent classroom block serving the entire school. The latest destruction has exposed the vulnerability of the school's infrastructure, particularly during the rainy season.
Abiara described the destruction as a major setback to education at the school and appealed to Kalaki District authorities and development partners to urgently intervene by providing emergency classrooms and support for the construction of permanent structures.
The district inspector of schools, Stephen Max Eriku, confirmed the incident and said district education officials had begun assessing the extent of the damage.
He assured the school that the district would identify temporary alternatives to enable learners to continue with their studies as plans are made for a long-term solution.
Eriku emphasised that learning should not be interrupted despite the disaster and pledged that the district would work with relevant stakeholders to ensure the affected pupils return to class as soon as possible.
He further cautioned school administrators across Kalaki district to prioritise disaster preparedness by installing lightning arresters and strengthening school safety measures as heavy rains continue to affect many parts of the district.
