______________

Police say they have arrested over 20 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters for defying security warnings while accompanying their presidential flag-bearer, Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, for a rally in Mityana district.

Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson Patrick Onyango said the 29 had been detained at Wakiso Police Station.

"On October 6, 2025, presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu planned to travel to Mityana district for his presidential rally. He was expected to take the Mityana highway but chose to use Hoima Road. A joint security deployment was arranged to facilitate the candidate’s movement," Onyango said.

He revealed that at Bujjuko trading centre on the Mityana highway, a group of NUP supporters gathered, drumming, whistling and blocking the road, disrupting traffic flow and inciting unrest by blocking roads.

“Security personnel issued warnings, but the group persisted, leading to the arrest of about 29 suspects who are currently held at Wakiso Police Division. We urge all presidential candidates to comply with traffic regulations, follow approved route plans, and respect the rights of other road users,” he said.

Kyagulanyi is among the seven presidential candidates who were nominated by the electoral commission to contest in the 2026 presidential elections against the incumbent President Yoweri Museveni.

Others are Robert Kasibante Robert of the National Peasants Party (NPP), Joseph Mabirizi from the Conservative Party (CP), Nathan Nandala Mafabi from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Maj. Gen. Previous run-in with the Police

This would not be the first time police is clashing with NUP supporters. On Monday, September 30, 2025, the Police urged all politicians and their entourages to comply with traffic laws during the campaigns leading to the 2026 General Election.

The call came in the wake of a serious September 29, 2025, road crash on the Kalagi-Kayunga Road near Namyoya village, involving motorcycles and vehicles escorting National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential flag-bearer Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine. The crash occurred at about 11:30am.
