EC database hacked: Police investigating how voters’ data ended up on Amazon-based website

Last Friday, human rights lawyer and executive director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance, Sarah Bireete, was remanded to Luzira Prison until January 21, 2026, over allegations of illegal disclosure of national voter information.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the EC had written to them about the breach, but could not readily confi rm how far the investigations had gone. This comes days after Bireete was charged with unlawfully obtaining or disclosing personal data, in violation of the Data Protection and Privacy Act. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.
