KAMPALA - Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Parish in Kansanga Makindye Division, Kampala, is seeking sh600m to renovate its church as it prepares to mark 25 years since its establishment as an independent parish.
The parish has scheduled a fundraising dinner for Saturday at Sheraton Kampala Hotel, with Kampala Catholic Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere expected to attend as the guest of honour.
The renovation drive comes as the parish continues efforts to improve its facilities and strengthen its role as a centre of worship and community life.
According to the parish's published history, the church’s construction started in 1975, when Kansanga was still a sub-parish of Nsambya. It was formally inaugurated as an independent parish on December 2, 2002, by then Auxiliary Bishop of Kampala Christopher Kakooza, who installed its first parish priest, Rev. Fr. Joseph Bbuye.
Over the years, the parish has expanded its facilities and undertaken development initiatives, including improvements to its educational institutions and other community projects.
Collective effort needed
Parish Priest, the Rev. Fr. Blaise Zimbe Ssebizibu, said the renovation project requires collective effort, urging parishioners and well-wishers to contribute towards its completion.
He described the fundraising initiative as an opportunity for members to demonstrate their commitment to the parish and its future.
Ssebizibu said the work required to restore and improve the church had reinforced the need for collective support, adding that contributions from the community would help bring the project closer to completion.
Head of Laity Dr Joseph Harman Kawuma also urged the parishioners to take an active role in the initiative, saying everyone had a part to play, whether through financial contributions or mobilising others to support the cause.
The parish is targeting sh600m through the fundraising campaign. Individual tickets for the dinner are priced at sh300,000, while a table for 10 costs sh3m.
Ssebizibu said the refurbishment is part of the parish's ongoing development efforts as it looks towards its silver jubilee in 2027.
