Residents of Orungo County in Amuria district are mourning following the shooting of Saidi Eteru, 30, at Apaasi trading centre during New Year's Day celebrations.
Authorities say the incident involved the security detail of foreign affairs minister Gen. Jeje Odongo and that the deceased was reportedly shot when a confrontation occurred between the security personnel and local residents.
Eteru’s body is currently at Amuria General Hospital mortuary pending autopsy, while over three other residents sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.
When Etop Radio visited the scene, hundreds of supporters had gathered at Apaasi trading centre, demanding justice and calling for accountability.
Apaasi A Village LC1 chairperson Joseph Olupot said the community is in a sombre mood, reflecting shock and concern over the incident.
Amuria District RDC Paul Eseru described the incident as regrettable and said the perpetrators will be held accountable. He urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue.
Amuria District LC5 Chairperson Moses Emabu expressed shock and called for enhanced security in the area, noting that Orungo County has been identified as a high-risk area ahead of the elections.
East Kyoga regional Police commander Hajji Ibrahim Saiga condemned the act, assuring the community that police are supporting the investigation and stressing the importance of accurate information from residents to ensure justice is served.
NRM parliamentary candidate Teddy Anyuk Osire appealed to supporters to remain peaceful and allow security agencies to handle the matter.
Meanwhile, Gen. Jeje Odongo stated that the live bullet was discharged during an altercation with supporters, resulting in the tragic death of Eteru.
Authorities continue to urge calm in the county and emphasise the importance of peaceful conduct as the election period progresses.
