NAKASONGOLA - A 15-year-old girl has died and five others were injured following a road crash at Sasira trading centre along the Kampala–Gulu highway in Nakasongola district.

The accident occurred on March 22, 2026, at about 11:50 am and involved a black Subaru Forester, registration number UA 969 AD, and a white Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UA 525 DA.

Police identified the deceased as Anita Lunkuse, who died on the spot.

According to preliminary investigations by police, the Toyota Hiace had been legally parked in a designated lane on the left side of the road, facing Kampala, while picking up and dropping off passengers.

It is alleged that the Subaru Forester, which was travelling from Kampala towards Gulu, attempted to overtake another vehicle within the trading centre but lost control in the process and rammed into the stationary taxi.

The crash left five people injured, including Amon Bukenya, Vanisha Nakazibwe (16), Sadrack Sesanga (25), Zam Nanyombi, and the taxi driver, Emmanuel Seguya.

Emergency responders rushed the injured to Nakasongola Health Centre IV for treatment, while the body of the deceased was taken to the same facility for a postmortem examination.

Police officers visited the scene, documented the crash, and drew a sketch plan to support ongoing investigations.

Both vehicles have since been towed to Nakasongola Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

Savannah Region Police spokesperson ASP Sam Twiineamazima said investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing.

The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety in Uganda.

According to the 2025 Annual Crime Report, the country recorded 25,107 road crashes in 2024, marking a 6.4 percent increase from the previous year. These incidents resulted in 25,808 casualties, up from 24,728 in 2023, despite ongoing efforts to improve road safety.
