Trailer breaks loose, kills mother and child in Luwero home

The detached trailer veered off the road and rammed into the victims' roadside home, resulting in the fatal incident

A woman and her three-year-old daughter died instantly after a trailer that broke loose from a moving truck rammed into their roadside home in Luwero on Sunday (March 22).


The incident left two other family members seriously injured. They were rushed to Luwero Hospital in critical condition.


The Savannah Regional Police spokesperson, Sam Twineamazima, said the incident occurred at around 5:00 am at Ngogolo village, about 5km after Luwero town on the Kampala–Gulu highway.


According to Twineamazima, the fast-moving Mercedes-Benz truck, registration numbers SSD 908A and SSD 909A, was travelling from Gulu to Kampala when the incident happened.


Twineamazima said the detached trailer veered off the road and rammed into the victims' roadside home, resulting in the fatal incident.


He identified the victims as 38-year-old Annet Nandyose and her three-year-old daughter, Doreen Nakkazi, who both died at the scene.


Two other family members, Samuel Kigwe, an adult male believed to be the father, and Jovan Kalule, a juvenile, sustained injuries and were rushed to Luwero Hospital for treatment.


Twineamazima said police officers visited and examined the scene, before taking the injured victims to Luweero Hospital and the bodies of the deceased to the mortuary for postmortem examination.”


The police spokesperson said they had impounded the truck at Luwero Police Station, where it is expected to undergo a mechanical inspection to determine the cause of the trailer detachment.
