One dead, as offices are set on fire in Imvepi settlement over refugee elections

One Person has been confirmed dead after a violent election process of Refugee Welfare Council (RWC) 3 elections in Imvepi settlement within Terego district.
The violence, which broke out on Tuesday afternoon (August 25) over a disagreement between the two candidates contesting for the position of the RWC3 Imvepi, attracted different tribes settled in the settlement.
This resulted in violence, which led to the vandalism of properties at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and that of the police, which were later set on fire.
The angry and riotous refugees continued to cause havoc, and it took the intervention of officers from the Uganda police and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces to contain the situation.
Speaking to New Vision online in a telephone interview, Rose Munduni, the Terego Assistant Resident District Commissioner, confirmed that the elections have been stopped until further notice due to the violent and destructive actions of the refugees.
The angry and riotous refugees continued to cause havoc, and it took the intervention of officers from the Uganda police and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces to contain the situation.

The refugees across West Nile were scheduled to elect their leaders for RWC 3 after the elections for RWC1 and 2 were earlier conducted successfully.
However, the elections for RWC 3 in Imvepi turned violent following a disagreement between two candidates.
