A 28-year-old man is in police custody for allegedly murdering his wife in Omoro district.

Joel Akena, a resident of Lela-Obaro village in Bobi sub-county, was apprehended on Saturday by community members and handed over to Police.

Godfrey Ojera Adoko, the Chairperson of Lela-Obaro Village, said the suspect had earlier reported to his uncle, Justin Okello, that his wife, Rebecca Aling, 20, had died after a short illness.

However, Okello became suspicious because there had been no prior reports of the deceased being ill.

Okello subsequently reported the matter to local leaders, who mobilised community members to arrest the suspect and take him to Bobi sub-county Police Station.

While in custody, Akena reportedly confessed to killing his wife after a misunderstanding.

According to Ojera, the body of the deceased has been transferred to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, the Aswa West Region Police Spokesperson, David Mudong Ongom, confirmed the arrest, saying the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
