Court further heard that although Musenero lacked the professional qualification to perform the procedure, she allegedly went ahead, causing grievous harm to the patient.

The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kaliro district has remanded an enrolled nurse following her arrest by the State House Health Monitoring Unit over an alleged botched surgical procedure that left a pregnant woman with severe internal injuries.

Court on June 15, 2026, heard that on March 17 this year, 27-year-old expectant mother Mariza Nambi went to Nawaikoke Health Centre III for antenatal care when the accused, Teddy Musenero, 36, allegedly instructed her to undress before inserting instruments into her birth canal.

Nambi, a mother of four and resident of Buzaya village in Bukamba subcounty, Kaliro district, had previously been attending antenatal sessions at Irundu Health Centre. However, after persistent abdominal discomfort, she opted to seek further care at Nawaikoke Health Centre III.

Prosecution told court that despite the patient’s resistance and repeated screams, the nurse proceeded to carry out a cervical evacuation procedure.

Court further heard that although Musenero lacked the professional qualification to perform the procedure, she allegedly went ahead, causing grievous harm to the patient.

The incident is said to have occurred after the enrolled midwife in charge of the maternity ward, Jodreen Wankya, left the facility for a training session, leaving Musenero as caretaker of the ward.

Yosamu Muzaaya, the husband of the victim, told court that he rushed to the facility after hearing his wife screaming and found that the procedure had gone wrong.

“I rushed in when I heard her screaming and found out that the so-called evacuation had extracted what looked like intestines. So, we got a vehicle and took my wife to Bumanya Health Centre IV, which serves as Kaliro district hospital,” Muzaaya revealed.

He said the condition of his wife prompted him to report the matter to the State House Health Monitoring Unit in search of legal redress.

At Bumanya Health Centre IV, enrolled midwife Mercy Naigaga told court that the patient was received in critical condition.

On examination, it was discovered that about 70 to 100 centimetres of intestines had protruded through the vagina.

“This necessitated urgent surgical management. Otherwise, the patient was received just padded to protect her from excessive bleeding, but without any referral document,” she said.

Dr Benard Walujjo of Bumanya Health Centre IV told court that he conducted emergency surgery to repair a perforated gut and uterus.

Kaliro Grade One Magistrate Kaibei Cherotich asked Musenero to respond to the charges, which she denied.

The magistrate then remanded her to Kaliro Government Prison until June 30, when the case will come up for mention.
