NUP vice president Lina Zedriga remanded over incitement charges

GULU - The Gulu Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru, the Vice President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for northern Uganda, on charges of incitement of violence.
Dr. Zedriga Waru, 64, appeared before Chief Magistrate Augustine Alule Koma on Friday, following a week of uncertainty surrounding her whereabouts amid heightened political tension ahead of the national presidential election polling day.
Her disappearance had sparked widespread speculation and concern among supporters and political observers.
According to court documents, Dr. Zedriga Waru is charged under Section 79 (1) of the Penal Code Act, Cap 128, which relates to incitement of violence.
The prosecution alleges that in December 2025, she made statements at various locations in northern Uganda—including Gulu City and the districts of Amuru, Omoro, and Nwoya—that incited violence against supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) based on their political affiliation.
The prosecution further claims that her actions prompted attacks on NRM supporters.
When she appeared in court on Friday morning, Waru was dressed in a zebra-patterned T-shirt and appeared calm and composed as proceedings were conducted.
The Chief Magistrate ordered that she be remanded at Gulu main prison.
