The Town Clerk, who also chairperson of the organising committee, said the exercise was a symbol of love for the President and a reminder to the community that sanitation and hygiene are essential for healthy living.

He added that involving schoolchildren in the activity was meant to empower them and instil in them a culture of cleanliness and responsibility as future family heads and leaders.

Yumbe chief administrative officer (CAO) Thompson Obong commended the town authorities for the initiative, emphasising that sanitation and hygiene are everyone’s responsibility regardless of age or gender.

“Diseases caused by poor sanitation don’t select who to attack. This means we all need to join hands to maintain good hygiene, and this begins at home,” Obong said.

Yumbe district chairperson Abdulmutalib Mahamoud Asiku praised the NRM supporters for their efforts and urged them to make such cleaning exercises routine.

“As Yumbe town council aspires to attain municipality status, it is important to have a clear plan for solid waste management,” Asiku said.

“This should not only happen because of the President’s visit. It should be a continuous effort involving both district and town council staff together with school children.”

Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Hajji Sulaiman Lubwama Bukya noted that the growing population in Yumbe Town requires collective effort to manage waste effectively. He urged the town council to conduct regular sensitization campaigns to encourage residents to take responsibility for their environment.

Avako Melisha Naima Gule, the Woman Member of Parliament for Yumbe District, who also participated in the exercise, commended the NRM supporters and local leaders for spearheading the cleanliness drive.

She encouraged residents to always ensure their surroundings are clean and to take personal initiative whenever they find litter.

“In some towns, waste management is everyone’s responsibility. If someone sees rubbish being dropped, it is picked immediately without waiting for the person who threw it,” Avako said.
