NRM expression of interest for Speaker and Deputy Speaker as it happened

The exercise, taking place at the party headquarters, has attracted senior legislators, party officials, and supporters as aspirants pick and return nomination forms ahead of the internal party processes.

By the close of the expression of interest exercise, a total of 19 aspirants had been nominated, four for the position of Speaker and 16 for Deputy Speaker. Of the 16 deputy speakership aspirants, one candidate, Persis Namuganza, is NRM-leaning.

According to NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi, only NRM party candidates will be nominated. He further noted that NRM-leaning candidates will be considered for the Speakership race under the party process.

How it stands so far

As it stands, 12 candidates have expressed interest in the position of Deputy Speaker of Parliament, while two have declared interest in the Speakership under the NRM party today.

The process began yesterday (Friday, May 22, 2026) with the opening of expressions of interest for both positions, although no candidates were nominated on the first day.

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) on Friday, May 23, officially opened the expression of interest process for Members of Parliament seeking the party flag for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

The exercise which took place at the party headquarters, attracted several MPs, including outgoing Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, former State Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs Jacob Oboth Oboth, Rukungiri Municipality MP Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde, and Omoro District Woman MP Catherine Lamwaka, among others.

The process, overseen by the NRM Electoral Commission, chaired by Dr Tanga Odoi, involved the issuance and verification of nomination forms as aspirants formally entered the race for the parliamentary leadership positions.
