The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) will hold the My Identity Expo and National Symposium from September 24 to 26, 2026, to promote legal identity, registration and identification across Uganda.

The symposium will seek to increase public awareness about the importance of legal identity and drive registration, particularly birth registration. Legal identity enables access to services and opportunities including education, healthcare, banking, employment, travel and voting.

Ahead of the event, the Vision Group’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Don Wanyama, paid a courtesy visit to NIRA headquarters today, August 27, reaffirming the two institutions’ longstanding partnership.

Wanyama said Vision Group had worked closely with NIRA on several public engagements and appreciated the authority’s support. “On behalf of Vision Group, I want to appreciate the partnership we have had with NIRA over the years.”

He cited the recent Bride and Groom Expo, where NIRA took members of the public through the process of a civil marriage. Wanyama said feedback showed the NIRA activation was one of the biggest takeaways from the expo, with about 70% of people who witnessed it identifying it as their most memorable activity.

“It was just not because of the excitement, but also because of the information that the public was able to get,” he said.

The NIRA Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo, said the authority currently has over 36.15 million people on its register, representing close to 77% of Uganda’s population of 45.9 million.

She said NIRA receives more than eight million identity verifications every month and recorded 109 million verifications last year.

Kisembo said NIRA serves more than 50,000 Ugandans countrywide every day, while its Kololo headquarters receives about 3,000 walk-in clients daily.

She said the authority is required to register an estimated nine to 10 million unregistered people, about 1.5 million births and 300,000 deaths annually, in addition to renewing six million identity cards.

The symposium is expected to strengthen public understanding of identity services and encourage wider registration and identification.
