The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), together with the Uganda Embassy in the United States of America, will carry out mass renewal of expired National IDs and new registration of first-time applicants at the Embassy premises in Washington D.C., from Tuesday, August 26 to Thursday, August 28, 2025, between 9:00am and 4:00pm.

In a notice published by NIRA and the Embassy, applicants are required to pre-register online at https://prereg.nsis.nira.go.ug/pre-registration-ui/#/eng. They must then print the online application form and present it at the time of registration. Biometrics will be captured at the Embassy.

The notice indicated that “no prior appointments required for this mass national ID registration exercise, and that the exercise are free of charge.”

For renewal of IDs, applicants are required to carry their expired original National ID, the printed form sent via email after online submission of their application, and a police letter for lost IDs (valid within one month and presented at the time of replacement).

For new applicants, requirements include the printed form sent via email after online submission of the application, an original Ugandan passport, a birth certificate, and a photocopy of the National ID of one or both parents.

If parents are deceased or do not have a National ID, applicants may present a photocopy of the National ID of a blood relative such as an uncle, aunt or older sibling.

On May 27, NIRA rolled out the mass enrolment and renewal drive, which is expected to benefit over 33 million Ugandans, including 15.8 million whose National IDs were set to expire by June 2025, and another 17.2 million citizens, many of whom have never been registered.

NIRA also unveiled a new generation of National IDs equipped with sophisticated security features aimed at reducing fraud.
