MASINDI - Residents of Karujubu Cell in Masindi municipality are in disbelief following a break-in at the Karujubu Police post during the early hours of Tuesday, November 18, 2025, walking away with NIRA equipment.
Unknown thieves made off with several valuable items belonging to the National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA), including three laptops and long cable wires.
The incident, according to reports reaching New Vision Online, happened at about 3:00am, and local authorities were alerted to the theft shortly thereafter.
Karujubu Division LC3 chairperson Solomon Asiimwe received a phone call about the break-in an hour later.
He confirmed that the thieves fled the scene after the Police fired warning shots into the air, leaving behind some stolen items in their haste.
“This recent spate of thefts has left our community on edge. Criminals have increasingly targeted residents, stealing domestic items and even raiding gardens. I urge the district security committee to enhance security measures, particularly as we approach the festive season," he appealed.
Asiimwe also encouraged community members to report any suspicious activities to nearby Police posts or relevant authorities, emphasising the need for swift intervention to ensure a smooth continuation of local services.
In an alarming twist, Karujubu division town clerk Julius Isingoma reported that the thieves attempted to break into the office.
He subsequently alerted Masindi Central Police Station, filing a report under the reference number SD REF 53/18/11/025.
Masindi district NIRA registrar Suzan Nabunje Kiyengo confirmed the incident but declined to divulge much.
Albertine North Police regional community liaison officer Solomon Mugisa, also acting Police region spokesperson, confirmed the theft, saying that investigations are already underway.
He urged community members to provide any information that may assist in apprehending the culprits, particularly if they encounter anyone trying to sell stolen electronic devices.
This is the first reported theft relating to NIRA equipment. However, the incident is likely to slow down registration, identity card renewal, and issuance efforts by the body in the area.
NIRA recently said it had started issuing Uganda’s new enhanced National ID cards across district offices.
