Nile Star bus services has temporarily suspended operations of its passenger transport services effective November 7, 2025.

However, the company indicates that its courier services remain operational.

But the General Manager Nile Star Trade Link, Amin Wise Onzima, said that the decision follows an urgent directive requiring all drivers and turnmen to attend a compulsory meeting with transport sector stakeholders, including: Ministry of Works officials, Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV), plus the company's branch managers and mechanics.

He said the meeting has been convened following the recent accidents and operational uncertainties involving Nile Star buses, which have drawn the attention of the Government and its implementing partners.

In October, Uganda woke up to a rude shock with the Police reporting that 46 people died in a crash involving two coaches belonging to Nile Star bus and a Planet Company bus. Other victims were travelling in a private car.

News of the suspension of the Nile Star passenger transport services comes barely a day after a Nile Star bus en route from Kampala to Arua City had a serious accident at Alengo Swamp in Diima Sub-County, Kiryandongo District, on the Kampala-Gulu highway on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

The bus, with registration number UBG 019C, overturned with some passengers, with no fatalities recorded.

Preliminary investigation showed that the driver failed to manoeuvre to overtake two vehicles as another vehicle was approaching.

As he closed in on his side, the driver, Saidi Iriam, was hooked to a motorcycle with registration number UDP 704U, which was being ridden by Innocent Gumperom, a 22-year-old who was carrying three passengers. All of them sustained serious injuries.

The three occupants were Nyandira Priscilla, aged 18, a student; Rubangakene Samuel, aged 20, a resident of Pi-Akeo Village, Diima sub-county; and Arach Agnes, aged 29, of Mukono.

The police attributed the accident to reckless driving by the driver. The bus driver, Saidi Iriam, was, by press time, arrested and detained at the police station.
