The Namibia Honorary Consul to Uganda, businessman Godfrey Kirumira, has congratulated the people of Namibia upon getting a new leader, after the passing of President Hage Gottfried Geingob.

Geingob, 82, was pronounced dead on Sunday morning. His Vice President, Nangolo Mbumba, 83, was on Sunday sworn in to take over the office.

Mbumba picked Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as his Vice President.

Kirumira said both new leaders, Mbumba and Nandi-Ndaitwah, were recently in Uganda for the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Group of 77+China summit that took place at the Speke Resort Convention Centre between January 15 and 23, 2024.

Kirumira said that although the consulate and friends of Namibia in Uganda were still mourning Geingob’s passing, whom he described as a man of the people and down to earth, they were also celebrating the two new leaders.

He said the new leaders were equally good and Uganda had a lot of hope in continuing with the good relationship that was started with the former President.

Kirumira said the new President and the Vice President enjoyed their stay in Uganda during the two summits although the new President cut short his visit to fly to DR Congo where he represented the then-President at the swearing-in of President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi.

According to Kirumira, Vice President Nandi-Ndaitwah chose to stay for a week in Uganda.

The two leaders, Kirumira said, visited the consulate on Lumumba Avenue, his home in Buziga, and toured Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, where they were received and taken around by businessman, Hamis Kiggundu.

“We are now waiting for the burial program so that we can go to attend the ceremonies,” Kirumira said, adding that Uganda has cordial relations with Namibia.

At the time of the death of the former President, he said, the consulate was organising a trip for businesspeople in Kampala to go and explore trade opportunities trade in Namibia.

“Our program still stands, and we shall come up with a new date,” he explained.
