A 25-year-old man has collapsed and died under unclear circumstances in Simbwa Zone, Kansanga in Kampala's Makindye East Division.

Pascal Ainebyona's sudden death while outdoors on Wednesday evening, around 5pm, stunned residents, especially those who watched him collapse.

Eyewitnesses said Ainebyona was moving around and interacting with friends when he unexpectedly dropped to the ground. At first, those around him assumed he would regain consciousness, but moments later, concern turned into panic when he failed to respond.

His friends reportedly attempted to lift him up, but he remained motionless.

They later moved him to another location as curious residents gathered to find out what had happened. Despite the efforts of those around him, Ainebyona did not wake up.

The exact cause of his death has yet to be established.

Kansanga Police arrived at the scene later and transferred the body to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a postmortem examination.

Ainebyona hailed from Rugando in Rwampara district, although his family relocated to Kyangwali, Hoima district, in 2017.

His elder brother, Jonathan Karugaba, told New Vision Ainebyona had struggled with substance abuse and had been living a difficult life on the streets.

He said that in 2024, Ainebyona was involved in a serious accident and was admitted to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he underwent a head operation. Following the surgery, doctors advised him to avoid alcohol consumption and stay away from noisy environments to boost his recovery.

"We tried to interest him in normal work, but he refused," said Karugaba.

"He resumed taking alcohol and other drugs. He had reached a point where he was barely eating food and was surviving mainly on drugs."

Karugaba said his brother’s condition continued to deteriorate despite repeated efforts to guide him toward a better life.

Ainebyona had reportedly spent much of his time in Simbwa Zone and Kiyembe slum, areas often associated with drug abuse and criminal gangs.

Residents said many young people in these slums drop out of school and end up joining gangs or becoming addicted to drugs, a growing social challenge that continues to affect communities in Kampala.

The untimely death of Ainebyona has left many unanswered questions about what exactly caused his collapse.

Locals are now hoping that investigations and medical examinations will establish the circumstances surrounding the final moments of a young man whose life was cut short amid a reportedly long battle with addiction and hardship.
