Travellers between Obongi and Adjumani districts will have to use alternative routes after the government temporarily suspended operations of MV Obongi following the emergence of a technical fault.

The Ministry of Works and Transport announced Sunday (June 14) that the ferry, which operates on the Obongi-Sinyanya route, was withdrawn from service on June 13, 2026, to allow engineers to carry out urgent repairs.

According to the ministry's permanent secretary, Waiswa Bageya, the suspension was necessary to guarantee the safety of passengers and cargo using the crossing.

Technical teams have since been deployed to assess the problem and undertake maintenance works before the vessel can return to service.

The Obongi-Sinyanya crossing is an important transport link for residents, traders and travellers moving between Obongi and Adjumani districts.

The ferry provides a shorter connection across the River Nile and plays a significant role in facilitating trade, access to services and movement of goods within the West Nile sub-region.

With services suspended, travellers have been advised to use alternative routes provided by the ministry.

One option is travelling through Kampala, Gulu, Adjumani, crossing via MV Laropi Ferry before proceeding through Moyo to Obongi. Another alternative is the Kampala-Pakwach Bridge-Nebbi-Arua-Koboko-Yumbe-Moyo-Obongi route.

The ministry said the suspension will remain in place until repairs are completed and the vessel is certified fit for operation.
