Muwanga Kivumbi granted bail

The National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy president for Buganda region, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, has finally been released on bail.
There was heavy security at Butambala Grade One Magistrate's Court as the former Butambala MP appeared again before the court for his bail application.
On August 11, Kivumbi appeared before the same court as it gave a ruling on the substantiality of the sureties he presented for his bail in a fresh case of inciting violence and managing an unlawful society.
However, he did not secure bail as some of his sureties were not found to be substantial. Kivumbi first appeared before the court on July 29 and denied the charges.
Prosecution alleges that on July 9, 2026, while at his home in Bugoye within Gombe Town Council, Butambala district, Kivumbi organised or supported actions to unlawfully overthrow the Government of the Republic of Uganda.
The state further alleges that Kivumbi hosted a gathering of hundreds of people and during this meeting, he incited the public to rebel and disrupt the activities of the Government of the Republic of Uganda.
Prosecution alleges that on July 9, 2026, while at his home in Bugoye within Gombe Town Council, Butambala district, Kivumbi organised or supported actions to unlawfully overthrow the Government of the Republic of Uganda.
The state further alleges that Kivumbi hosted a gathering of hundreds of people and during this meeting, he incited the public to rebel and disrupt the activities of the Government of the Republic of Uganda.
In the second count, prosecution alleges that Kivumbi and others still at large attempted to manage an unlawful society by mobilising citizens to stage violent protests with the ultimate goal of overthrowing the democratically elected government of Uganda.
Defence lawyers led by the senior counsel Medard Lubega Sseggona asked court to grant Kivumbi bail on grounds that it is his constitutional right and that he was brutally arrested and tortured while in detention by security forces.
Lawyers asserted that Kivumbi needed urgent medical attention from specialised doctors, which he had failed to get while under detention. Kivumbi was remanded to Kitalya Prison until Tuesday, when court convened to pronounce itself on the validity of the sureties he presented before court.
After Kivumbi secured bail, NUP secretary general Lewis Rubongoya took to his X platform and posted: “Honourable Kivumbi granted bail by the Court in Butambala. We can all hope and pray that he won't be abducted or arrested again as [it] happened last time. [We are] grateful to everyone who has been following up - and especially the people of Butambala for the great show of solidarity.”
Before the latest case came up, Kivumbi, together with 23 others, had been charged with terrorism before the International Crimes Division of the High Court, and he had been released on bail before he got re-arrested.
