Mukono district khadi, Sheikh Abass Ssenkuba Zubairi, has condemned acts of torture in the country and called for peace as Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections.
Sheikh Ssenkuba made these remarks while leading Eid prayers at Masjid Atiqi, the main mosque in Mukono district.
The khadi emphasised that supporting a different political party should not be a crime in a democratic society. However, he urged political groups with members engaging in insults and hostility to encourage civil discourse and avoid toxic or abusive politics.
The Eid prayers were attended by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) executive director Sharifah Buzeki, who urged Ugandans to embrace cleanliness and stop indiscriminate garbage disposal.
She attributed the increasing floods in Kampala and surrounding areas to poor waste management.
Mbale deputy resident city commissioner Yahaya Were encouraged Muslims to maintain discipline even after Ramadan and to uphold unity.
He pledged to relay their concerns to the President, calling for the release of prisoners, particularly those detained for political reasons, as a gesture of goodwill to Muslims and other faiths during Eid.
Mukono MP Betty Nambooze Bakireke also called on Muslims to unite in urging President Museveni to grant pardons to prisoners on Eid.
"During these holidays, the President should pardon some prisoners because many of them are detained without formal charges," Nambooze stated.
Hajji Haruna Ssemakula, the chairman of the Muslim community in Mukono district, called for unity among Muslims and urged them to strengthen security at their homes while attending Eid celebrations.
