Music Review: Practical – Eddy Kenzo

Practical is the sort of song that is going to be popular with the ladies, because it is a song that lauds the attributes of a man that seems to be a priority for the ladies today. It was a practical choice of song, one might say.

So Eddy Kenzo went and released a song called Practical. Who else but Eddie, eh? And that’s not the only thing that invokes an eye-brow raising response about this song. He also went and released a remix of this song with arguably the nation’s top rapper, Ruyonga.

Kenzo divides opinion in town with half the population wishing they could get the opportunity to pound him to bits, and with the other half worshiping him and buying into his spiel.

Somewhere in between those two polarised views is a young man who has perfected the art of the hustle and oddly, has something of a music career. He is also an astute businessman who uses his everyman appeal with ruthless efficiency.

He also knows how fix some of his weaknesses – when some folks questioned his singing ability, he went and took some vocal lessons. That’s the only explanation I have for what he sounds like on Practical – much more improved than the tedium he is often associated with.

Practical is the sort of song that is going to be popular with the ladies, because it is a song that lauds the attributes of a man that seems to be a priority for the ladies today. It was a practical choice of song, one might say.

In the song, Kenzo sings about being a practical, tactical fellow with quite a bit of cash on him, something that seems to be an important trait within the dating space that is occupied by what appears to be mainly orphaned women.

The song is executed with an afro pop style that typifies most of Kenzo’s material – I wouldn’t be surprised if he has put out a patent on this sort of groove. It is also unusually multi-lingual: Luganda, English, and what I could swear was Rwandese.
Whatever you say about the music that is produced under Kenzo’s music stable Big Talent Entertainment, you have to admit – the production style is often neat, polished even.

These attributes, along with the song’s directness, will work well with his fan base. And Eddy knows his fan base, and knows what will work. Because he is practical.
