President Yoweri Museveni has said he will camp in Karamoja in mid-march to end cattle raids in the region.

“If you the army and Police fail to solve this issue as soon as possible, I will camp in this region to fight cattle rustling,” he said.

Museveni said he would be camping and at the same time touring the area on issues of security and the Parish Development Model (PDM).

The President's directive followed a request from Chua East Member of Parliament Margaret Lamwaka to intervene in the attacks from Karimojong warriors.

He was today (February 16) speaking during the commemoration of St Janani Luwum Day, which was under the theme: United for Service and Growth at Mucwini Primary School playgrounds in Kitgum district.

Museveni also asked the Police to use sniffer dogs to track raiders who he said have destabilised the region's peace.

“We can have criminals arrested and brought to book. We have all the necessary capacity to counter these raids. I will talk to our army and policemen to help,” Museveni said.

Who was Janani Luwum?

Luwum, who was the archbishop of the Church of Uganda from 1974 to 1977, was murdered on February 16, 1977, on the orders of the then-president of Uganda, Idi Amin Dada over allegations of wanting to overthrow the government.

Archbishop Luwum was the head of the Anglican ecclesiastical province, which was then composed of four countries (Burundi, Eastern Congo, Rwanda and Uganda).

The government of Uganda declared February 16, every year, a public holiday to commemorate his life and martyrdom.
