President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday paid tribute to the late Rev. Eliasaph Sserwadda, describing him as a devoted servant of God whose legacy continues to inspire both church and nation.

The commemoration was held at All Saints Kanyeganyegye Church of Uganda in Kashari South County, Mbarara district, drawing hundreds of worshippers and leaders from across the country.

The President was represented by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa at the service, which also doubled as a thanksgiving for the construction of a new church valued at sh1.3 billion in memory of Rev. Sserwadda, the father of Col Edith Nakalema, head of the State House Investors Protection Unit.

The event was graced by the 9th Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Uganda, Rev. Dr Samuel Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, and former Archbishop Rev. Dr Henry Luke Orombi.

In a speech read on his behalf, President Museveni described the death of Rev. Sserwadda as a profound loss to the family, the Church of Uganda and the many lives he touched through ministry.

He thanked Sserwadda’s children for organising the commemoration, saying their actions demonstrated a commitment to preserving their father’s memory and carrying forward his works.

“I wish to thank God for the life and legacy of the late Omubuurizi Eliasaph Sserwadda. He will always be remembered for his lifelong commitment to serving God and the Church. Although he is no longer in our midst, his memory and legacy will remain as an inspiration to the present and succeeding generations,” the President stated.

Speaking at the ceremony, Col Nakalema said her father left behind a legacy anchored in love, faith and service, adding that the family remains committed to serving God in all fields.

“We shall always honour the church, the Church of Uganda stamp educated us,” she stated, noting that Rev. Sserwadda served in 17 churches for 53 years before being ordained at the age of 74.

Col Nakalema also thanked President Museveni and the First Lady, describing them as her second parents, and credited their support for her growth in public service.

She said the construction of the new church through the Rev Sserwadda Foundation was meant to honour her father’s lifelong devotion to God and community.
