Sudan’s military leader, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, has accepted an invitation to visit Uganda for talks with President Yoweri Museveni as part of renewed efforts to advance peace mediation in the conflict-ravaged country.
The development followed a meeting in Khartoum on July 4, 2026, between Uganda’s Special Envoy on President Museveni’s Sudan Peace Mediation Initiative, Ambassador Joseph Okello Ocwet, and Gen. Burhan, during which he delivered a message from the Ugandan leader on the ongoing mediation process.
According to the Uganda Embassy in Khartoum, the meeting reviewed previous peace initiatives that have failed to end Sudan’s conflict.

During the discussions, Gen. Burhan expressed confidence in President Museveni’s ability to bring together key stakeholders necessary to achieve lasting peace in Sudan.
He also confirmed his willingness to travel to Kampala for further talks with President Museveni, with the date to be agreed through diplomatic channels.
The meeting also produced a diplomatic breakthrough, with Sudan offering Uganda land in Khartoum to construct its permanent embassy premises.
Ambassador Ocwet was accompanied by Uganda’s Ambassador to Sudan, Dr Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu, Defence Attaché Brig. Gen. Tingira Irumba, and External Security Organisation director Moses Onzima Droma.
Earlier, the Special Envoy paid a courtesy call on Sudan’s Prime Minister, Dr Kamil El-Tayeb Idris, where they discussed bilateral and regional issues linked to the peace mediation process.
During the meeting, Ocwet congratulated the Prime Minister and Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council on regaining control of Khartoum and restoring security in the capital.
The Ugandan delegation arrived in Khartoum on Friday and was received at Khartoum International Airport by Lt Gen. Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal, Director General of Sudan’s General Intelligence Service, and Chief of Protocol Amb. Ahmed Ismail.
Uganda has been positioning itself as a key regional mediator in efforts to end the conflict in Sudan, with President Museveni leading diplomatic initiatives aimed at fostering dialogue among the country’s rival factions.
