Murdered Entebbe couple relatives ask CID to expedite investigations

“We are still devastated ever since they killed our people and we are not certain who they would want to kill next,” a relative said during funeral prayers at the All Saints Cathedral in Kampala city on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Relatives of the elderly couple that was brutally murdered in Lugonjo–Nakiwogo cell, Entebbe municipality, have asked the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) to expedite investigations into the matter and ensure that those responsible are brought to book.

The victims, David Mutaaga, 69 and his wife Deborah Florence Mutaaga, 62, were murdered in cold blood at their home.

Preliminary findings indicate the attacker entered the couple’s master bedroom by tampering with the asbestos roofing and breaking through the window.

“There were clear signs of forced entry through the roof and not the doors. This was someone who knew the layout of the house,” a senior detective close to the probe said.

The Police believe the suspect exited the house through the main gate—a move suggesting he was familiar with the victims and their routines.

“We are still devastated ever since they killed our people and we are not certain who they would want to kill next,” a relative said during funeral prayers at the All Saints Cathedral in Kampala city on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Eulogised

During the funeral service, the two families (man and woman) hailed the deceased for their generosity, love and humility.

Meanwhile, the deceased’s children, who attended the funeral virtually, (video link) eulogised their parents as having been lovely and caring parents who stood by them since childhood in all conditions.

In her sermon, All Saints Cathedral Provost the Rev. Can. Dr. Rebecca Nyegenye condemned the heinous act and appealed to the bereaved families not to take revenge on the killer but instead fill their hearts with love and repentance.

Only their portraits instead of caskets were presented during the service.

Some relatives, who preferred anonymity, said Mutaaga will be laid to rest at their ancestral burial grounds in Naggalabi Buddo, while his wife is likely to be taken back to her late father’s home for burial.

Investigations

The forensic team lifted fingerprints and collected several materials of evidential value at the scene, which have been submitted to the Government Analytical Laboratory for further analysis. In addition, investigators retrieved CCTV footage from the home for analysis.

Sources said the footage shows how the attacker gained access to the home, adding that he came with a knife in his hand. The attacker was reportedly saying some words as he stabbed his victims.

According to sources, the killer repeatedly called the victims by their names during the attack.

“He kept saying: ‘Deborah, do you think it’s only you with children? We also want to be well off. You can call whoever you want, but I have come to kill you and nothing will deter me from fulfilling my mission,’’ a security source quoted the assailant.

“The level of precision and the escape route strongly suggest this was not a random attack,” Police said, adding, “We are following leads that indicate a possible family feud over the inheritance of the late patriarch’s property.”

Sources revealed that the Police are also investigating reported conflicts surrounding the distribution of family land and assets.

“There’s already tension surrounding who is in charge of the family estate, even as the bodies lie unclaimed,” one investigator noted, adding, “This has the potential to delay key decisions on burial and legal responsibilities.”
