MUKONO - A 25-year-old teacher has been remanded to Luzira prisons until July 28 over aggravated defilement involving a 16-year-old pupil.

Mukono Grade One Magistrate Praise Ahurira on Friday remanded Nathan Odeke, accused of sexually assaulting the girl on two separate occasions.

According to court proceedings, the first incident allegedly occurred in May 2026 when Odeke, a teacher at Mother’s Pride Nursery and Primary School in Gulaama village, Goma, trapped the girl inside the students' dormitory where he allegedly raped her.

The second alleged assault took place on July 10, 2026, inside one of the classrooms at the school.

Investigations revealed that the incident was reported by a male pupil who witnessed the act and raised an alarm, prompting teachers to report the matter to police.

State prosecutor Babra Anguzu told the court that investigations into the case have been completed and asked that Odeke return to the court for mention.

Magistrate Ahurira explained that aggravated defilement is a serious offence beyond the jurisdiction of the magistrate’s court. She noted, however, that the accused retains the right to apply for bail at the High Court, which has the authority to handle such matters.

Odeke remains in custody and will return to court on July 28 for further proceedings.

The case has raised fresh concerns about the safety of learners in Ugandan schools, particularly the vulnerability of girls to sexual exploitation by individuals entrusted with their care.

Child protection advocates have repeatedly called for stricter vetting of school staff and enhanced supervision in boarding facilities to prevent such incidents.

Aggravated defilement carries severe penalties under Ugandan law, including lengthy prison sentences upon conviction.
