Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje has been sworn in for another term of five years as Mufti of Uganda.

Mubaje started his new term on Thursday, March 13, at Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), headquarters in Kampala after an oath administered by Sheikh Zayid Swaleh Lubanga, the director of sharia.

Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, the first deputy mufti of Uganda who recently celebrated his 70th birthday was also sworn in for another term of five years.

The two were sworn in after the college of eminent sheikhs (Majilis al Ulama) endorsed them for another term of five years in office.

According to the old constitution of UMSC, Mubaje and Waiswa were meant to step down after clocking 70 years, but on July 13, 2022, the general assembly amended it to allow the mufti to serve up to 75 years of age.

Protesting the amended constitution, earlier this month, a case was filed against Mubaje and the 43 members of the UMSC management, Majlis Ulama (college of eminent sheikhs) and joint session.

The case filed by Swaibu Nsimbe, Twayibu Byansi, Musa Kalokora and Musa Kasakya is scheduled for hearing on March 19 at the Civil Division of the High Court in Kampala.
