The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) has confirmed that six people were killed in Yatui Parish, Kween district, while three children died in Bukwo district following mudslides triggered by a downpour.
In a statement released Thursday, October 30, URCS spokesperson Irene Nakasiita said the incident occurred on Wednesday night.
“Due to the ongoing heavy rains, a mudslide occurred in Chesower, Bukwo district, resulting in three confirmed deaths (children) from one family. Uganda Red Cross volunteers are on the ground conducting assessments, and a more detailed report will be shared as soon as possible.”
She noted that access to Bukwo remains difficult as roads have been cut off due to continuous rainfall and poor road conditions.
“Uganda Red Cross teams are coordinating with local authorities and members of the community to support ongoing response efforts. A detailed assessment will be done and shared in due course,” she added.
Landslides are a recurring hazard in Uganda’s mountainous east, particularly around Mt Elgon, where heavy rainfall and steep slopes combine to make the terrain especially vulnerable.
