Msgr. Kasibante cautions Christians on religious extremism

The director of Lay Apostolate Movements in Kampala Archdiocese, Msgr. Charles Kasibante, has paid tribute to members of the devotion of St. Jude Thaddeus for their deep commitment to the faith.

He praised them with even greater gratitude for their prayers, which he said enable many members of the Church to deepen their faith, commitment and loyalty to the Church.

“St. Jude Thaddeus was an Apostle to whom Jesus entrusted with the mission to continue preaching the Gospel and spreading his Kingdom, to bring all generations into the presence of God. When we pray through the intercession of St. Jude, our faith is strengthened. We are empowered to become strong witnesses of Jesus. St. Jude is one of the strong devotions in Kampala Archdiocese and Uganda. Through our involvement in the devotion, we see the closeness of God through his saints. The saints walk with us through our journey to heaven,” Kasibante said.

He was delivering his homily during the Eucharistic sacrifice for the closure of the second annual novena of St. Jude Thaddeus at Our Lady and St. Jude Thaddeus Nagguru (in Nakawa Division) on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

Kasibante thanked the devotees of St. Jude for their involvement in the annual novena prayers before asking them to remain focused on the doctrine of the faith.

“A devotion is supposed to turn us into good witnesses of the Gospel. We should thus never forget our mission, which is to know God, to love Him, to serve Him, to witness to Him in our homes, at our workplaces and everywhere we go. People should know we are followers of Christ by who we are because of who we are. The way we speak, the way we relate with others should reflect our Christian faith. The novena responds to our petitions but also touches our hearts and minds. It transforms us. It changes our way of doing things and how we deal with one another,” he said.

Msgr. Kasibante later asked the devotees of St. Jude to avoid religious extremism, adding that any devotion should strengthen the faith of the members as opposed to inciting spiritual complacency.

“We must remain balanced in our spiritual life and not be misled by individuals or feelings that may happen in our life,” Kasibante cautioned.

The National Director of the Devotion of St. Jude Thaddeus, Fr. Joseph Mary Bbuye also paid tribute to the devotees for their commitment and involvement in the nine-day novena prayers.

The Head of the Laity of Naggulu Shrine parish, the Rt. Hon. Margaret Nantongo Zziwa Babu commended the devotees and friends of the parish for their generous financial contributions towards the construction of the new shrine church. She assured the Catholic faithful that construction of the church would be completed relatively soon, if the factors remained favourable.

During the same function, the devotees prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the former directors of the devotion, who included Msgr. Anatoli Kamya, Msgr. John Baptist Kanyi, Fr. Godfrey Kyeyune and Fr. Viatori Muvunyi.

The liturgy that carried bold marks of inculturation (Africanisation of Christianity) was animated by St. Kizito Choir from St. Peter's Proto-cathedral Nsambya.
