MP among over 70 arrested during presidential nominations in Kampala, Kajjansi

On the first day, Police say they detained 44 suspects at Jinja Road Police Station for phone snatching and pickpocketing during President Yoweri Museveni’s rally at Kololo

Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) says it arrested 79 people during the two-day presidential nomination exercise held on September 23–24, 2025, at the Electoral Commission offices in Lubowa and Kajjansi town council.

KMP spokesperson Patrick Onyango says security operations were largely successful in maintaining order, though several incidents led to arrests.

On the first day, Police say they detained 44 suspects at Jinja Road Police Station for phone snatching and pickpocketing during President Yoweri Museveni’s rally at Kololo.

The second day saw 35 more arrests in Kajjansi, including, Makindye West legislator Allan Ssewanyana, the, who was apprehended alongside others for disobeying security guidelines.

Onyango said Ssewanyana and his group were later released on Police bond.

Meanwhile, some supporters of Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, were arrested for reckless riding and assaulting members of the public. 

Police also impounded two motor vehicles and 40 motorcycles linked to the disorder.

Despite these incidents, Onyango said the nomination exercise concluded without major disruptions or serious security threats.
