Police in Mbale are searching for a driver who fled the scene after a high-speed crash claimed the lives of three people on the Mbale–Soroti highway.

The fatal crash occurred at about 6:00pm on January 26, 2026, at Nakaloke, opposite Ideal Girls High School, according to preliminary Police findings.

The vehicle involved, a black Toyota Mark X registration number UBR 123R, was being driven by an unidentified motorist who reportedly lost control while travelling at a very high speed.

The car rammed into a motorcycle and a pedestrian, killing all three victims on the spot before the driver fled the scene.

Police identified the deceased as Juma Hayongo, a bodaboda rider; Nasuru Hamba, 48, a passenger on the motorcycle and a resident of Nakaloke; and a female pedestrian, only identified as Zakia, also of Nakaloke.

Preliminary investigations indicate that both the motor vehicle and the motorcycle were heading in the same direction when the speeding car veered off its lane near Nakaloke trading centre and struck the motorcycle before knocking down the pedestrian.

Traffic officers have attributed the cause of the crash to suspected speeding.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Mbale City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Both the damaged Toyota Mark X and the Bajaj Boxer motorcycle were towed to the police station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV), according a copy of a police report seen by New Vision Online.

By press time, the driver of the Toyota Mark X remained at large as Police launched a manhunt to bring him to book.

Police have once again urged motorists to observe speed limits and exercise caution on highways, warning that reckless driving continues to claim innocent lives.
