More females graduate at Uganda Christian University

A total of 1,274 students on Friday (July 03) graduated with master's degrees, postgraduate diplomas, bachelor's degrees, and diplomas at Uganda Christian University (UCU), Mukono.

Of these, 698 are female (55%), while 576 are male (45%).

Among the graduates, 102 attained first-class honours, of which 60 are female.

The 27th Graduation ceremony was officiated by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Henry Orombi, the retired Archbishop of Uganda.

While conferring degrees upon the medical graduates, Archbishop Kaziimba expressed concern over proposals to scrap medical interns' allowances.

"There have been discussions about scrapping medical interns' allowances. Whoever suggested the idea should reconsider it because these doctors provide invaluable support to our healthcare system," he said.

The Masters in Public Health and Leadership (MPHL) graduates are among the graduates. The MPHL programme trains multidisciplinary professionals to lead, manage, and advocate for maternal, new-born, and child health.

Every year, approximately 260,000 women lose their lives due to pregnancy and childbirth-related complications, while more than 2.3 million newborns die within their first month of life.

The overwhelming majority of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries and are preventable through timely, quality healthcare and coordinated action across sectors.
