Ugandan teams registered mixed results as the three day NSSF KAVC International volleyball tournament got underway today at Lugogo.

Hosts who are aiming to reclaim past glory saw KAVC-B and Ndejje among those in the women's category that registered victories in the championship. Ndejje defeated Muzinga of Burundi 3-0 (25: 17,25: 15,25: 16) while KAVC-B stopped Seroma 3-0 (25: 22,25: 23,25: 13).

In other games, Rwanda Police beat Ugandan side COBAP 3-0 (8: 25,16: 25, 9: 25), while APR of Rwanda stopped South Sudan’s COBRA 3-0 (25: 14,25: 15,28: 26).

In the men’s category, Rwanda’s APR and Kepler won 3-0 each against MOSO Sugar (Burundi) and the Police of Uganda. Kepler made their debut in this year’s competition. Burundi’s Rukinzo lost 1-3 to REG of Rwanda.

18 women's teams and 12 men's teams from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan among others are taking part in the competition hosted at MTN Arena Lugogo and Hockey ground.

The championship which aims at championing better community health and behaviour through sports, saw NSSF, the main sponsors inject sh45m in this year's competition.

Last year, both the men's and women's competitions were won by Rwandan sides Police and APR respectively. This year’s edition also has corporate teams and secondary schools, expanding the tournament’s reach.

 KAVC president Irene Kiconco was happy with the turn-up of both teams and fans.

"The turn-up is good and I believe those who have watched the games on the first day have enjoyed. We expect more to happen in the next two days and we call upon those who have not passed by Lugogo to do so," noted Kiconco.
