The Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, has chastised ministry staff handling the digital number plates project, saying they were sleeping on the job.
As a result, Byamukama directed that the staff be reshuffled to create sanity in the project. Byamukama was speaking during a meeting with car and motorcycle importers, car dealers, and bond operators at the ministry today (July 2).
Byamukama said his staff at the ministry were sleeping on the job. "These people you are seeing here are sleeping on the job instead of doing what they are supposed to do. I have ordered a reshuffle of the staff from various positions," he said.

Byamukama revealed that majority of Ugandans are paying for their digital number plates, but take more than a month to get the number plates.
"A person is supposed to get his number plate within 8 hours after applying, why are they taking more than a day to get their number plates?" Byamukama wondered.
The minister revealed that some Ugandans are paying sh3m for digital number plates contrary to what is supposed to be paid (sh150,000).
Byamukama gave the Joint Stock Company Global Security, the company charged with manufacturing digital number plates, an ultimatum of three weeks to clear the backlog of the number plates applied for in the system.
During the meeting, the dealers revealed that the trackers within the number plates do not work as earlier claimed.
