KAMPALA - A 40-year-old midwife from Luwero district has been remanded over theft of government drugs.
The Standards, Utilities and Wildlife Court at Maindye remanded Irene Marion Namugabi to Luzira over the theft and possession of government stores.
Namugabi, a midwife at Luwero Hospital, was on Tuesday (November 3) arraigned before court, charged and remanded.
The court's chief magistrate, Gladys Kamasanyu, read two charges to Nasmugabi, which she denied.
State prosecutor Martin Arinitwe told court that investigations were complete, adding that they were ready to produce witnesses on the next adjournment.
The offence
Prosecution alleges that Namugabi and others, still at large on October 7, 2026, at Luwero Hospital in Luwero district, stole drugs, that is, 46 tins of Deluteravir/lamuvudine/tenofovir disproxil fumarate tablets commonly known as ARVs, taken by HIV positive patients.
It is alleged that the drugs were valued at Sh22m and were the property of the Government of Uganda.
The charge sheet presented to court further states that Namugabi and others, still at large, while at her residence in Ddungu zone-Kikaaya within Kawempe division, Kampala, were found in possession of the said drugs: 46 tins of drugs, one pack of Pearl Fine cotton wool, two parcels of gauze, all bearing marks 'government of Uganda, for public use not for sale'.
The drugs, according to the prosecution, were reasonably suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.
The court remanded Namugabi until November 10, 2026, for hearing of the case.
