Mathematics should be fun

Learning mathematics is a skill, which every pupil should be equipped with for life.

While celebrating the International Mathematics Day at Buddo Junior school, Professor Betty Nannyonga, the chairperson of The Association of Women in Mathematics Uganda (AWoM) appealed to the young learners to love mathematics since it can take them places.

Prof. Nannyonga, also a lecturer at Makerere University remarked that learning mathematics is a skill, which every pupil should be equipped with for life.

The theme of the day was “playing with maths,” and this was exhibited through music, dance, skits and drama.

Quizzes and games were played by the pupils and the winners were awarded with trophies, certificates and the medals.

The day, which was organised by AWoM, Buddo Junior School and Simplifi Networks, Uganda started off at 7:00 am with a run around the school playground. Later, with the lead band, the children matched around the Buddo village in celebration of the pi-day.

Ken Stober, the chief guest, encouraged learners to make maths relevant to their daily lives.

“Go to school and get the skills so that you can get money in future,” said Stober who is also the chief executive officer, Simplifi Networks, Bugolobi says. “You can do that by getting good grades.”

Additionally, Stober encouraged girls to keep in school and take on STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) if they want more job opportunities available to them in future.  

On the other hand, the school head teacher, Earnest Kavulu advised learners not to fear maths, but master the subject so that they can excel in it.

Moses Jjuko, a teacher revealed that maths is a very good subject, which every learner should embrace with fun.

At the end of the day, John Festus Muwonge, the director of M-Lukka Associates Ltd who was the chief runner said he expects every pupil to work hard and pass the subject, which will help them attain their life goals.
