Rt Rev. Francis Aquirinus Kibira, the Bishop of Kasese Catholic Diocese, which was selected to lead this year’s June 3 Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo, has revealed that organisers still require sh2 billion to meet the total budget of sh4.5 billion for the event.
He disclosed this during two recent Mass sessions with staff of Kasese District Local Government and Kasese Municipality, including a meeting held on April 30, 2026, at the municipal headquarters in Central Division.
Kibira, who was the main celebrant at both prayer sessions as part of mobilisation efforts, said the diocese had received sh2 billion from the central government, while believers, organisations and well-wishers had contributed sh500m, leaving a shortfall of sh2 billion.
"May God bless everyone for their endless support towards the cause until we make the day of those who suffered for Christianity a success," Kibira said.
In support of the preparations, Kasese Municipal Council staff donated sh8 million in cash, adding to the sh16 million contribution from staff of Kasese District Local Government.

Kibira, while receiving the contributions, urged leaders and staff to remain committed to prayer for the success of the event. He also called for loyalty in service, timely accountability and the rejection of corruption tendencies.
"Spiritual support is very key, especially in functions where we commemorate people who died for Christianity," he explained.
In an interview with the
New Vision on May 1, 2026, Kibira revealed that at least 2,000 pilgrims from the Democratic Republic of Congo had expressed interest in attending this year’s celebrations at Namugongo.
He described the development as a sign of growing appreciation for Christianity across Uganda and the wider African continent.
"We are currently in the process of registering the names and particulars of the Congolese with the security agencies and clearing them with the Ministry of Internal Affairs," Kibira said.
Kasese leaders speak out
In support of the preparations, Kasese district local government technical and political staff contributed sh16m, with sh8m paid in cash and the remainder pledged.
Kasese district chief administrative officer Edward Kasagara pledged continued support to the diocese, noting that the success of the Namugongo event would reflect positively on the district.
"And I want to assure you, Bishop, that my staff and I must attend without fail, but also others will join the march up to Namugongo," Kasagara said.
Kasese district LC5 vice chairperson Jerevesious Monday Bwambale praised the Bishop for promoting evangelism alongside development, particularly in health, education and socio-economic transformation.
This year’s celebrations will be held under the theme “Jesus is alive in you and me”.
