IGANGA - Anthony Kalulu is nowhere to be seen, but once the Police finally track him down, he will have a lot of explaining to do.
His 56-year-old mother was found dead and buried inside her house on Thursday this week after a relentless search for her in a village in Uganda's eastern district of Iganga.
On top of that, the Police recovered a blood-stained machete (panga), axe and stick inside her home.
In the wake of the tragic discovery, which Police are now treating as a murder case, preliminary findings are pointing to a family land dispute gone deadly.
Michael Kasadha, the Busoga East regional police spokesperson, gave an account of how Sylvia Bakulimya likely ended up dead — based on eyewitness accounts.
All this happened in Kasolo village in Bulamagi sub-county in Iganga.
Some residents had reportedly recently heard Kalulu threaten his mother over a land sales agreement.
Concerned, the runaway suspect's brother, Edward Kawoma, sent his wife to check on their mother at her home on Wednesday, but she did not find her there. That sparked a fruitless search for Bakulimya.
Kawoma later asked Kalulu about their mother's whereabouts. He reportedly said he did not know where she was.
Upon returning to his mother's house much later and still finding the place locked, Kawoma ordered his brother, who was reportedly sleeping in nearby home, to open Bakulimya's house.
He obliged.
“Upon entering the house, Kawoma found a heap of soil inside the deceased’s bedroom and several blood-stained items," said regional police spokesperson Kasadha.
With the help of area residents, including local leaders, Kawoma conducted a search around his mother's home, during which blood-stained clothes and bedsheets were discovered.
Suspecting foul play, Kawoma reported the matter to Iganga Central Police Station.
The Police arrived at the scene and recovered Bakulimya’s body buried inside her house. She reportedly had visible head injuries.
Detectives from Iganga Central Police Station visited the scene and collected items for evidence, including the blood-stained panga, axe and stick.
The body was taken to Iganga Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
At the time, Kalulu was nowhere to be seen, believed to have fled. Police are now hunting for him, and once found, he will be a crucial ingredient in the ongoing investigations.
