The main suspect in the murder of a woman in Akuya B village, Awaliwal sub-county, Soroti district, has voluntarily surrendered to police, marking a major development in a case that has shocked the community.

According to the Soroti district police commander, Moses Olang, the suspect, identified as Moses Akol, 38, turned himself in at Katakwi Central Police Station shortly after the incident.

“Our counterparts in Katakwi confirmed that the suspect is now in custody. Investigations are ongoing,” Olang said.

Domestic dispute turns deadly

Preliminary police reports suggest that Akol is suspected of killing his wife, Jennifer Ayapo, 41, following a domestic dispute on August 4, 2025, over sh40,000 that had allegedly gone missing from their home.

What began as a verbal argument is reported to have escalated into a violent altercation, resulting in Ayapo’s death.

Police are now recording statements and collecting additional evidence as investigations proceed.

RDC condemns retaliatory attacks

Following the murder, some angry residents set fire to grass-thatched huts and destroyed food stores belonging to members of the community.

In response, Soroti resident district commissioner (RDC) Imuran Muluga condemned the retaliatory violence and directed that those responsible for the destruction be arrested.

“We must be peace-loving citizens and not take the law into our own hands. Let the authorities investigate and handle the matter according to the law,” said Muluga.

Police have since increased their presence in the area to restore calm and prevent further unrest.

Both the RDC and the DPC have urged residents to remain calm and allow the justice system to take its course. They emphasised the importance of community cooperation with the police to uphold peace and ensure justice is served.

“Our priority is to protect lives and property while ensuring that justice takes its rightful course,” DPC Olang added.
