Makerere University has launched the Innovativeness of Young Persons with Disabilities programme.

The project funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering, is aimed at connecting young persons with disabilities (YPWD) engaged in innovative business to stakeholders that can provide financial support.

“These young people have the zeal and the motivation to start something, but how can we propel them further?” Catherine Mbidde, the principal investigator of Makerere University said at the Economic Policy Research Centre in Kampala on Friday.

The Royal Academy of Engineering says that 8.5% of Ugandans and the young persons struggle a lot to access opportunities.

“These YPWD struggle to access opportunities. The aim of this programme is to identify those who have done something innovative and link them to stakeholders who can support them,” Mbidde said.

Berna Mugema, the head of experimentation at United Nations Development Fund, emphasized the need for YPWD to acquire computer and vocational skills to bring them closer to these opportunities.

The chief executive officer of the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda, Esther Kyozira, encouraged PWD to do their part by innovating and acquiring skills. This, according to her, will allow them to benefit from the opportunities offered by stakeholders.

“If someone tries to lift you halfway, you should also lift yourself through the other half,” Kyozira said.

The Royal Academy of Engineering is a charity organisation delivering public benefit from engineering and innovation. Together with various partners, the academy is focused on growing talent and skills for the future.
