Residents who seek treatment at Luweero Hospital have for a long time been complaining about extortion by some of the health workers but getting no redress.

However, a medical intern's luck ran out when he was this week apprehended by the Police for allegedly soliciting a shillings 250,000 bribe from a man whose wife was in labour.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 4, 2025, afternoon, when the intern reportedly demanded the bribe from Julius Kakooza, a resident of Galikwoleka in Kamira sub-county in Bamunanika to attend to his expectant wife who had been admitted at the hospital.

Savannah Police region spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima on Wednesday afternoon said the intern's arrest followed a tip-off from some informers.

Twineamazima said after failing to raise the bribe, Kakooza, through some informers, contacted the Police who in conjunction with the hospital authorities, laid a trap, arresting the intern red handed, while receiving the shillings 250,0000 bribe.

Twineamazima said the Police set the trap by giving Kakooza 250,000, which was used to lay the trap.

According to Twineamazima, Kakooza was instructed to hand over the money to the unsuspecting intern in presence of plainclothes policemen who swiftly arrested the intern red handed.

Luwero Hospital medical superintendent Dr Bruno Oyik said the arrested intern had worked at the hospital's maternity ward for eight months by the time he was arrested.

Kakooza alleged that the intern had asked him to pay 250,000 in order to have his expectant wife undergo surgery.

After his arrest, the intern was whisked to Luwero Police Station where he was being held by press time.

Twineamazima said the Police had by Wednesday recorded statements from the complaints and medical personnel at Luwero Hospital, before preferring relevant charges against the intern.

The incident comes amid rising complaints from residents over rampant cases of extortion by some of the medical staff at Luwero Hospital.

According to several witnesses, patients at the hospital are usually asked to pay for things like gloves, batteries and test tubes.
