Seventeen people are nursing injuries after a lorry carrying market vendors collided with a Gulu University bus at Bongcao trading centre on Lira–Aduku Highway in Lira City West Division.

The crash, which occurred on July 4, 2026, at about 8:00 pm, left passengers with varying degrees of injuries. Most of the victims have since been treated and discharged, according to police.

North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema said the accident involved a white Fuso Fighter lorry, registration number UBK 662J, and an Isuzu bus, registration number UAK 482G, belonging to Gulu University.

Preliminary police findings indicate that the Fuso lorry was transporting market vendors from Aduku Market towards Lira city at what was described as relatively high speed. Upon reaching Bongcao Market, it collided with the Gulu University bus, which was rejoining the highway from a feeder road after returning from a traditional marriage ceremony in Boke.

A total of 17 people sustained injuries and were rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital and Lira Midtown Clinic for treatment.

Other sources indicated that the number of injured could be higher because some victims left the scene on their own to seek treatment at private clinics.

Police said the identities of all the victims had not yet been established at the time of issuing the statement, although most had already been discharged.

The scene was visited by the Lira City West Division traffic officer and other police personnel, who documented the crash and commenced investigations.

Both vehicles were towed to the Lira City West Division Police parking yard pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

Police have urged motorists to exercise caution, observe speed limits and maintain proper road discipline, particularly when joining major highways from feeder roads, as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
