LIRA - The fourth national cleaning day exercise will take place in Lira city on Saturday, the Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, has announced.
According to Nabbanja, this is in recognition of Lira city's importance of hosting the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.
The government introduced the National Day cleaning exercise in July, and the third one was held in Hoima city, which will also host the cherished African football match.
Nababanja, who was flanked by government ministers, including the second deputy leader of government business at Parliament, Crispus Kiyonga, and the third Deputy Premier Rukia Nakadama, urged Lira city leaders to spot the areas to be cleaned and mobilise the population to participate in the exercise.
The cleaning initiative, according to Nababbanja, was initiated by President Yoweri Museveni to encourage building a culture of patriotism.
“All Districts, Cities, Municipalities, Town Councils, Sub-counties, Parishes and Villages are expected to participate fully in this nationwide exercise.
She appealed to Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), Resident City Commissioners (RCCs), District Chairpersons and Mayors, Chief Administrative Officers, City and Town Clerks, Security Personnel and Local Council leaders particularly LC-I Chairpersons should provide effective leadership, supervision and coordination to ensure the successful implementation of the exercise.
Waste management and sanitation
The Prime Minister directed all responsible Local Government authorities and relevant institutions to strengthen sanitation supervision, ensure timely removal of accumulated waste and enforce applicable sanitation measures.
She also tasked leaders to mobilise logistical support, including cleaning tools and protective equipment, wheelbarrows and Waste collection trucks.
Nabbanja called upon individuals, the business community, NGOs, and civil society organisations to actively support and provide cleaning equipment and materials.
The health minister, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, revealed that he will table a statutory instrument to Cabinet on Monday to make it mandatory for every Ugandan to participate in the national cleaning exercise, and whoever is caught on the wrong side of the law would be prosecuted.
“I am going to table the statutory instruments to Cabinet on Monday, and once approved, it will be gazetted,” Dr Byaromuzi said.
The National Day cleaning exercise is meant to last three hours, from 7:00am to 10:00am; no movement is allowed apart from essential workers.
