Lions Club International to set up pharmacies for children with cancer

Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) has partnered with Global Hope to set up two pharmacies for children suffering with cancer in Mulago hospital.

This after LCIF allocated US $2m which will be shared among three countries including Uganda, Botswana and Malawi. The pharmacies will enable the patients to access good drugs at no cost.

Dr Peter Wasswa the Director, Global Hope said the fitting and modifying of the pharmacies will be completed before the year ends.

He said about 800 children are diagnosed with cancer every year across all the sights. He said the most common paediatric cancers include Solid Tumor at 38 % and Leukaemia at 32 % and Lymphoma at 18 %.

Lions Club of Uganda District 411B has 1,750 members.

During her visit at Global Hope in Mulago, the Vice President Lions Club International Dr Patti Hill on Thursday said that the ongoing partnership with Mulago Hospital staff, Global Hope, Bless a Child Foundation and Lions Club International Foundation is to ensure that the children at pediatric cancer have hope adding that the Lions Club has supported the work at the pediatric cancer centre at Mulago Hospital.

Hill said that they want to continue to invest in training of health workers and research. She added that “We need to make sure that we can have specialist services in more communities and we would like those special services to be in communities at all times,’’ she says

She said, “As the Vice President Lions Club International, It’s been a great privilege to view the outstanding work of the medical teams and the Lions here are partnering at Mulago Hospital.”
