Lightning strikes two dead in Kasese

Two people were confirmed dead on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, after they were struck by lightning in Kasese district.
The incident took place at the former Kikade Market, located next to the new taxi park in the Central Division, during a heavy downpour accompanied by a windstorm at about 3:30 PM.
ASP Elly Maate, the Rwenzori East Regional Police Spokesperson, identified the victims as Jeremiah Baluku, in his 60s, and Isaac Kihara, in his 40s, both of whom were residents of Karambi sub-county and Nyamwamba Division, respectively.
Maate has since asked the public to ensure they install lightning arresters on their buildings to secure their places from dangers that arise from heavy rains.

Maate has since asked the public to ensure they install lightning arresters on their buildings to secure their places from dangers that arise from heavy rains.
By press time, the bodies were still at Kasese Municipal Health Centre III for further post-mortem.
Baluku was a night watchman at the second-hand cloth stores near the old taxi park commonly known as Kikade market, while Kihara was an attendant at the dry cleaners section of the same outlet.
Sadayo Bwambale Kahuju, the general secretary for Nyakatonzi cell local council, described the deceased as social and good-hearted people, adding that their sudden death has created a big gap in the business community.
He advised the general public to always seek shelter in safe places to avoid such occurrences during the rainy season.
