Police are renewing calls for households in lightning-prone districts to install lightning conductors, after a 29-year-old man was struck and killed while bathing at his home in Kapchorwa municipality.

The incident occurred on July 10 at around 1:00pm at Kapchella cell, Tuban ward, West Division, Kapchorwa municipality.

According to Police, the victim, Barnabas Chemaye, was struck instantly by lightning while bathing.

The matter was reported to police by the deceased's mother, Annah Kamutya, 60, who resides in the same cell.

A police team comprising Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) and homicide detectives visited and documented the scene. Investigators recovered a burnt cloth as an exhibit and took photographs before recording statements from witnesses. Examinations confirmed that the deceased sustained burns consistent with a lightning strike, which struck the hut directly.

Police fire safety officers said simple, low-cost measures such as installing lightning rods, avoiding metal fixtures during storms and staying away from open bathing areas during heavy rain can significantly reduce the risk of fatalities.
