The Police in Gulu City has not yet produced lawyer Francesca Amony who is accused of stabbing her husband to death before court, due to her purported unstable mind.

Acwa River region commanding officer, Damalie Nachuha, made the revelation during a media briefing at the Northern Uganda Media Club in Gulu City on Monday.

“The suspect will eventually appear in court after recording a constructive statement. This would complete her file, coupled with a full investigation into the murder being carried out by the Police detectives,” Nachuha said.

Acwa River region spokesperson David Ongom Mudong said a murder by stabbing charge (CRB 313/2022) had been preferred against Amony.

Mudong said Amony, 34, who is also a breastfeeding mother of a two-month-old baby, was still in Police detention.

This was after she handed herself over to the Police after the alleged murder at her residence within Keyi A cell, Kasubi ward in Bar-dege/Layibi (Gulu West) Division on the night of October 28, 2022.

Murder weapon recovered

“The Police recovered the knife reportedly used by the suspect to stab to death her Mbarara City-based husband, Dr Joseph Etuk," Mudong said.

The Police said it was too early to get into the details surrounding the incident as it would jeopardise investigations.

Mudong disclosed that Etuk’s murder is the fifth case that was of domestic nature.

He said four similar cases of murder where women stab their husbands to death have been reported in the districts of Kitgum, Pader and Gulu.

In all the cases, knives have been used by the suspects. These cases have been reported.

Nachuha said there is need for both the Police and the local leaders to consistently sensitise the residents about how they can address domestic violence cases without ending another person's life.

“The cases of murder coming from domestic misunderstandings between wives and husbands have become rampant in northern Uganda, especially in the Acholi region over the past weeks. This needs to be addressed by everyone as our responsibilities in both the homes and communities,” Nachuha said.
